  • Meet the Man Building Elon Musk's 760MPH Hyperloop: Interview with Dirk Ahlborn

In 2012, Elon Musk, founder of Tesla and SpaceX, released a proposal for a futuristic tube transport system that could go faster than the speed of sound, cutting travel time between Los Angeles and San Francisco to 35 minutes or less. He described it as a "cross between a Concorde, a rail gun, and an air hockey table" that "can never crash," and called it the Hyperloop. But what exactly is the Hyperloop? "Imagine a capsule with 28 people that's hovering inside a tube at really high speeds of 760 miles per hour," says Dirk Ahlborn, CEO of Hyperloop Transportation Technologies (HTT), which is turning Musk's idea into reality. "It's completely solar-powered, it's cheaper to be built, it's earthquake-stable," he adds. Ahlborn recently sat down with Reason TV's Justin Monticello to talk about...

In the absence of sun exposure, the company uses LED lights that expose plants to only certain types of spectrum. AeroFarms claims it uses 95% less water than a traditional farm thanks to its specially designed root misting system. And it is now building out a new 70,000 square foot facility in a former steel mill. Once completed, it's expected to grow 2 million pounds of greens per year, making it the largest indoor vertical farm in the world. Ahlborn recently sat down with Reason TV's Justin Monticello to talk about the technology behind the Hyperloop, his vision for a fully integrated system that would span the country, and the stark differences between it and publicly-funded high-speed rail projects. Among the relative benefits of his project are that it would cost 10-20% of the estimated $68 billion being spent to construct California's high speed rail, cut down on environmental harm and land seizures by running along highways on pylons, actually produce energy, and be at least four times as fast. But his vision doesn't end at long-distance travel; he imagines a world in which people live in the fly-over states and work on the coasts. Ahlborn, who is also CEO of JumpStart Fund, a crowdsourcing platform for business that is enabling his open source approach to the project, eventually wants an app that allows you to push a button and be in a city hundreds of miles away in under an hour. "A self-driving car comes and picks you up and brings you to...a mini-loop inside the city that then takes you to the larger station," describes Ahlborn. "That's really when you change the way people live." HTT recently announced an agreement to begin construction next year on a fully functional urban Hyperloop in Quay Valley, California, which the company hopes to complete by 2018. If Ahlborn's team is correct, this futuristic technology may be coming soon. For the full interview, watch the video above. Hyperloop One, previously known as Hyperloop Technologies,[1] is a United States company formed to explore Elon Musk's Hyperloop concept. The company is currently building a short 1.9-mile (3 km) test track in the Nevada desert to test lightweight prototype Hyperloop pods. Its publicly stated long-term goal is to deliver a fully operational Hyperloop system by 2020.[2] On May 11, 2016 Hyperloop One conducted the first live trial of Hyperloop technology. Concept A Hyperloop is a high speed, intercity transportation system which uses passenger and cargo capsules inside a reduced-pressure tube system that would reach a top speed of 800 miles per hour (1,300 km/h) with a yearly capacity of 15 million passengers. Musk envisioned it as an alternative to the California High-Speed Rail project.[4] History In early 2015, Hyperloop One announced plans to build a freight-oriented Hyperloop to cover the 228 miles (367 km) between Los Angeles and Las Vegas.[5][6] Partners include Deutsche Bahn, SYSTRA and Bjarke Ingels.[7] In June 2016 the company announced a memorandum of understanding with the Summa Group and the Russian Government to construct a Hyperloop in Moscow.[8] Hyperloop One began making a full-scale prototype in 2016.[9] Test schedule In December 2015, the company announced plans to begin testing on an open-air track in Nevada in January 2016, intending to reach speeds of 700 mph (1,100 km/h) by the end of that year. The test track is approximately 0.62 miles (1 km). The initial testing will explore the ability of the company's linear electric motor to accelerate the test vehicle to 335 mph (539 km/h). Thereafter the company plans to construct a full-scale 1.9-mile (3 km) test track where levitated pods will pass through low-friction tubes.[2] By January 2016, HT had procured 50 acres (20 ha) of land and fabricated tube sections in order to build a test track in the Nevada desert. Construction of the test track was underway in 2016,[10] and tested at 2.5 g0 (25 m/s2) acceleration on May 11.[11][12] Funding Following a solicitation for a seed investment round led by SherpaVentures,[13] the company raised US$37 million in funding to support initial operations and the build of the 1.9 mi (3 km) test track in Nevada.[10] As of June 2016, it was announced that they had raised more than US$90 million for the next round of expansion.[8] Ultimately, the proposed track from Los Angeles to San Francisco is estimated to cost nearer to US$8 billion.[10] Initial engineering and design will cost around US$8.5 million. The test track should be able to be built and operated with US$80 million. According to a cost analysis team, a two-way passenger tube will cost US$45.3 million per mile.[14] Management Hyperloop is a tradename and a registered trademark of the Space Exploration Technologies Corporation (SpaceX) for the high speed transportation of passengers and goods in tubes[1][2] in which capsules are propelled by linear induction motors and air compressors.[3] Recently there has been a resurgence in interest in pneumatic tube transportation systems since being reintroduced, using updated technologies, by Elon Musk,[4][5] incorporating reduced-pressure tubes in which pressurized capsules ride on an air cushion driven by linear induction motors and air compressors.[3] The outline of the original Hyperloop concept was made public by the release of a preliminary design document in August 2013, which included a notional route running from the Los Angeles region to the San Francisco Bay Area, paralleling the Interstate 5 corridor for most of its length. Preliminary analysis indicated that such a route might obtain an expected journey time of 35 minutes, meaning that passengers would traverse the 350-mile (560 km) route at an average speed of around 600 mph (970 km/h), with a top speed of 760 mph (1,200 km/h). Preliminary cost estimates for the LA–SF notional route were included in the white paper—US$6 billion for a passenger-only version, and US$7.5 billion for a somewhat larger-diameter version transporting passengers and vehicles[5] —although transportation analysts doubted that the system could be constructed on that budget.[6][7][8] Hyperloop technology has been explicitly open-sourced by Musk and SpaceX, and others have been encouraged to take the ideas and further develop them. To that end, several companies have been formed, and dozens of interdisciplinary student-led teams are working to advance the technology.[citation needed] Designs for test tracks and capsules are currently being developed, with construction of a full-scale prototype 5-mile (8 km) track scheduled to start in 2016.[9] In addition, a subscale pod design competition on a very short, 1 mile (1.6 km), test track was built in Nevada – the first tests of the scale model occurred in May 2016.[10] -~-~~-~~~-~~-~- Please Like, Comment, Share, and Subscribe! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J6u2efLtRug -~-~~-~~~-~~-~-

UK based engineering company, Whitefox Technologies has successfully exploited market opportunities in the US after attending ‘Clean and Cool’ missions run by Innovate UK and Department for International Trade. Whitefox attended two ‘Clean and Cool’ missions in San Francisco and Brazil. The trips are designed to help entrepreneurs meet potential new investors, project partners and customers. They are also an opportunity to gain knowledge of the market and increase exposure. The missions helped Whitefox gain knowledge of the biofuels industry and understand the legislation on low-carbon fuels in the US. This gave them the confidence to pitch their technology solutions to US biofuel producer Pacific Ethanol. Pacific Ethanol successfully trialled Whitefox’s ethanol dehydration unit at their Madera plant in 2015 and then agreed a commercial deal in 2016. They are now in talks about additional installations at 7 further Pacific Ethanol plants. International demand for ethanol is growing, with 850 million gallons exported from the US every year, so this represents a huge market opportunity for Whitefox. Neil Koehler, CEO & Director of Pacific Ethanol, said: "It is hundreds and thousands of dollars of lower cost, on natural gas. In California, we’re reducing our carbon score by about a point, so almost $400,000 of value. There are very few technologies that we could point to that would give us that kind of quick return on our investment." Beam Pro - Testing Out At Westfield San Francisco. Like any Big Bang Theory fan, I saw these being demo'd at Westfield in San Francisco and had to stop and check out. I pushed him to try and do wheelies and burn outs but it won't go down in the history books for it's V8 Supercar performance. I am actually a big fan of these devices and see them becoming common in places like hospitals where they could potentially call on a massive bank of specialists from around the world to treat whatever situation may arise.
